Bibracte ligt op de berg Mont Beuvray, 25 kilometer van Autun in Bourgondië. Op deze berg, in het zuiden van de Morvan, ligt een uitgebreid gebied waar een oude Keltische stad wordt opgegraven. Hier kun je archeologen aan het werk zien, een prachtig museum bezoeken, heerlijk wandelen en tegenwoordig zelfs een uitdagend parcours in de bomen volgen. Die Fransen weten heel goed hoe ze het verhaal van het verleden op een populaire manier moeten vertellen.

Op een klein half uur rijden van Limoges ligt Oradour-sur-Glane. Het dorpje is een adembenemend monument van de gruwelijkheden die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn gepleegd. Het dorp werd door een SS eenheid verwoest waarna er onder de bewoners een bloedbad werd aangericht. Vlak na de oorlog bezocht De Gaulle Oradour en besloot dat het dorp moest blijven zoals de Duitsers het hadden achtergelaten, en zo is het nog steeds.

Frankrijk is een heerlijk land om op vakantie te gaan. Toch krijg ik veel mailtjes waarin wordt gevraagd waar wij overnachten. Welnu dat doen we in een gîte, ofwel een vakantiehuis dat je kan huren. Er zijn er miljoenen in Frankrijk, keus genoeg dus. Op een dik uur rijden van Tarbes ligt de Pic du Midi du Bigorre. Met een hoogte van 2.877 meter is het niet de hoogste berg van de Pyreneeën, maar zeker één van de interessantste om te bezoeken. Op de top hebben de Fransen namelijk een enorme sterrenwacht gebouwd die nog altijd een belangrijke rol speelt bij het onderzoek van het heelal. De trotse Fransen hebben het zelfs voor elkaar gekregen dat het uitzicht op de sterren vanaf de Pic du Midi op de werelderfgoedlijst staat.

Op een klein uurtje ten westen van Perpignan ligt het schilderachtige dorpje Eus. Dit oude gehucht is gebouwd op een berg met op de top een versterkt kerkje. In de straatjes en vanaf de pleintjes heb je een schitterend uitzicht op het dal van de Têt en de stad Prades met op de achtergrond de indrukwekkende berg Pic du Canigou.

Saint Lizier ligt ten zuiden van Toulouse en ongeveer 45 kilometer ten westen van Foix aan de rivier de Salat. Dit uitzonderlijke dorp heeft maar liefst twee kathedralen en een bisschoppelijk paleis. Daarnaast staat een groot deel van de Romeinse ommuring nog overeind. De nabij gelegen Pyreneeën zorgen voor een prachtige achtergrond en maken het stadje een bijzonder plekje in Frankrijk. Helaas behoort het dorp niet meer tot de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk maar is zeker interessant en een bezoek waard.

In de schaduw van de hoge toppen van de Pyreneeën ligt Saint Bertrand de Comminges. Een stadje dat al door de Romeinen werd bewoond en waar nu het aanzien van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een grote kathedraal. Je kan heerlijk wandelen en van de kunst en het uitzicht op cols van de buitengewone categorie genieten.

Voordat wij naar Frankrijk vertrekken hebben wij zo onze rituelen.  Dat heeft elk gezin denk ik wel. Eén daarvan is dat ik in de week van vertrek er voor zorg dat alle apps voor de smartphones en tablets up to date zijn. Hier de apps die wij het meest gebruiken tijdens onze vakantie in Frankrijk.
Bij deze klus kijk ik altijd of er nieuwe apps zijn die interessant, handig of gewoon leuk zijn. Dit zijn de apps die wij de afgelopen keer bij ons hadden. Frankrijk is groot en heeft gelukkig een prima snelwegennet waarover je zonder moeite in een dag naar de andere kant van het land rijdt. Je moet dan wel tol betalen, maar over het algemeen is de autoroute van goede kwaliteit.

Vanaf de stichting in 1090 is Villefranche de Conflent een vesting geweest. Het dorp ligt ook op een strategische plek tussen de hoge rotsen en de plek waar de rivieren Têt en Cady bij elkaar komen. De militaire waarde van het stadje was eeuwenlang groot. Nog in de negentiende eeuw zijn de vestingmuren vernieuwd en vergroot. Napoleon III was de laatste die opdracht gaf om Villefranche de Conflent nog eens flink onder handen te nemen. Daarover later meer.
