Sare is een dorp in Frans Baskenland en ligt dicht bij de Spaanse grens onder Biarritz. Het ligt in de Pyreneeën en hier worden de traditionele Baskische gebruiken gekoesterd en bewaard. Het is tevens een prima uitvalbasis voor wandeltochten in dit woeste berggebied tussen Frankrijk en Spanje.

Saorge is een prachtig dorp op een dik half uur rijden vanaf Menton. Het ligt op een berg boven de rivier de Roya en ondanks dat het vlakbij de Côte d’Azur ligt is het zeer rustig en lijken de toeristen deze mooie plek nog niet ontdekt te hebben.

Dit geldt eigenlijk voor de hele streek want zelfs in augustus was het hier nog redelijk rustig. Toch kan je hier fantastisch wandelen, fietsen en zijn er ook voldoende mogelijkheden voor raften, kanoën en canyoning. Lees verder Saorge: dorp met de mooiste steegjes van Frankrijk **** →

Wie de drukte van de Côte d’Azur wil ontvluchten hoeft niet echt ver te rijden om het landelijke karakter van het achterland te kunnen proeven. Coaraze ligt op een half uurtje rijden ten noorden van Nice en biedt die heerlijke rust die dorpen in het zuiden van Frankrijk zo kenmerkt.

Het middeleeuwse Coaraze ligt prachtig op een heuvel die uitkijkt op helling vol met olijfbomen. De kleine zwarte olijven met hun intense smaak die hier worden verbouwd zijn geliefd in heel Frankrijk. Deze kleine vruchtjes geven de streek al eeuwenlang hun identiteit. Sinds een jaar of tien ben ik gefascineerd door de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het is niet echt een obsessie maar als we in de buurt zijn van een belangrijke plek wil ik toch even een kijkje nemen. Zo ook toen wij in de herfst een weekje in de Elzas verbleven en bij toeval aanliepen tegen Le Linge, een plek waar je de Eerste Wereldoorlog bijna kan voelen.

Wie ooit de Elzas heeft bezocht met de auto kan het kasteel van Haut Koenigsbourg  nauwelijks gemist hebben. Op een kleine vijftig kilometer ten zuiden van Straatsburg staat het dominant bijna achthonderd meter boven het Rijndal te heersen. Daar staat het al sinds de dertiende eeuw, of eigenlijk er staat al sinds de dertiende eeuw een kasteel want het huidige exemplaar is gebouwd rond 1900 met het idee om een middeleeuws kasteel na te maken, maar dan nog middeleeuwser. Je zou het kunnen vergelijken met een Disneyland of de Efteling maar dan gebouwd voor de machtigste man van Duitsland; Keizer Wilhelm II.

De dorpen in de Elzas zijn zo schilderachtig dat je van tijd tot tijd toch twijfelt of de hele streek niet is bedacht in een studio ergens in Amerika, in vijf jaar gebouwd volgens een strak thema en de inwoners gewoon acteurs zijn. Voorzover ik kan nagaan is dat niet het geval maar als je door Kaysersberg loopt dan vraag je het je echt af. De mooie straatjes met de prachtige kleurrijke huizen, de versterkte brug met zijn kapeltje, het kasteel dat in perfecte staat van ontbinding op het dorp neerkijkt en de vallei met de uitzonderlijke goede balans tussen bossen en wijngaarden die als een patchwerk zijn neergelegd. Kaysersberg is echt helemaal perfect of het moet het weer zijn want het kan hier behoorlijk regenen.

De Vogezen liggen ten westen van de Rijn is één van de middelgebergten van Frankrijk. Vanaf het Rijndal beginnen de bergen vrij plots en rij je redelijk steil omhoog tot ongeveer 900 a 1.000 meter. Vlak daarachter liggen de hoogste toppen van het gebergte. Deze blijven onder de 1.500 meter en zijn daarmee flink lager dan de Mont Ventoux, de maatstaf voor alle bergen. Wat ze in hoogte missen compenseren ze echter met uitzicht en landschap. Deze twee ingrediënten maken het hoogste gedeelte van de Vogezen een unieke en betoverend mooie plek.

Een klassiek Frans dorp heeft een grote kerk, een rivier en als het even kan een mooi kasteel. Bonneval sur Arc lijkt op niets van dit alles. Het dorp in de Haut-Maurianne in de Franse Alpen en ligt in een diepe vallei dat wordt omgeven door bergen waarvan de meeste toppen hoger zijn dan drieduizend meter.

Essoyes ligt in de Champagne iets ten zuiden van Troyes. De Champagne is niet echt mijn favoriete streek in Frankrijk maar het zuidelijkste gedeelte, de Aube, dat tegen Bourgondië ligt kan mij wel bekoren. Het landschap is daar wat ruiger waar je heerlijk kan wandelen en waar de dorpen mooi zijn. Ze zijn niet allemaal even mooi en interessant maar Essoyes is dit zeker wel. Daarbij heeft het dorp een rijke historie en was bovendien de woonplaats één van Frankrijks beroemdste schilders: Auguste Renoir.

Beynac-et-Cazenac is gebouwd op één van de mooiste kliffen langs de Dordogne en alleen daarom is dit dorp al een bezoek waard. Het kasteel torent hoog boven alle gebouwen uit en domineert nog altijd deze strategische plek. Militair stelt het natuurlijk niets meer voor maar op foto’s en ansichtkaarten regeert het nog altijd met harde hand.
