De Mont Aigoual is met 1567 meter niet de hoogste top van de Cevennen maar heeft zonder twijfel wel het mooiste uitzicht. Vanaf de top heb je niet alleen zicht op de Cevennen maar kun je bij helder weer de toppen van de Pyreneeën, die van de Alpen en de Cantal zien. Kijk je naar het zuiden dan zie je het prachtige blauw van de Middellandse zee en de vlakte van de Languedoc. Er wordt dan ook wel gezegd dat je vanaf Mont Aigoual een kwart van Frankrijk kan overzien. De abdij van Montmajour ligt aan de weg tussen Baux de Provence en Arles. Het is nu een interessante ruïne met verschillende gebouwen waaronder een grote vierkante donjon. Dat laatste wijst op een militaire functie en dat heeft het gebouw ook meer dan eens gehad. Vandaag is de boel verlaten en is het binnen de dikke muren lekker koel bovendien heb je vanaf het donjon een prachtig uitzicht op Arles en de omgeving. Tel daarbij op dat dit uitzicht Vincent van Gogh heeft geïnspireerd tot het maken van bijzonder mooie schilderijen en je hebt één van de meest bijzondere ruïnes die ik heb bezocht in Frankrijk.

De Ardèche is bijzonder populair als vakantiebestemming en dat is ook goed te begrijpen. De streek heeft prachtige dorpen, mooie landschappen, het weer is ‘s zomers er bijna altijd goed en er is genoeg te doen. Het kan er ook best druk zijn. Wie de drukte en de warmte even wil ontvluchten is het bezoeken van een grot zeker een leuk uitje. Aven d’Orgnac is de grootste grot die je kan bezoeken in de Ardèche.

Even ten westen van Parijs ligt Auvers-sur-Oise. Een heerlijk stadje met een een Hotel de Ville, een paar cafés, een kleine Carrefour Contact en een station van de SNCF. Dat laatste maakt het dorp net even wat bijzonderder dan andere dorpen op en rond het plateau van Vixem en het station heeft er voor gezorgd dat dit dorp met hoofdletters is geschreven in de kunstgeschiedenis. Hier beleefde de grootste kunstenaar van Nederland zijn laatste gelukkige maanden voordat hij zelfmoord pleegde.

Limeuil ligt waar de rivier de Vézère uitmondt in de Dordogne in de Perigord. Het dorp is misschien één van de oudst nu nog bewoonde plek in Frankrijk want hier zijn spulletjes gevonden van mensen die aan het einde van de laatste ijstijd op rendieren en mammoeten jaagden. Dat moet een stevige barbecue zijn geweest. Daar is tegenwoordig niet veel meer van te zien maar dat gelukkig is er nog genoeg te beleven.

Monfanquin ligt precies tussen de Périgord en Guyenne en dat heeft de geschiedenis en het uiterlijk van het dorp voor een groot deel bepaald. Het dorp ligt op de heuvel Pech de Monflanquin en dat levert nu een mooi plaatje op maar de reden waarom het dorp juist daar ligt is een veel gewelddadiger; op een heuvel kan je een dorp goed verdedigen en dat was nodig ook.

De dorpen in de Elzas zijn zo schilderachtig dat je van tijd tot tijd toch twijfelt of de hele streek niet is bedacht in een studio ergens in Amerika, in vijf jaar gebouwd volgens een strak thema en de inwoners gewoon acteurs zijn. Voorzover ik kan nagaan is dat niet het geval maar als je door Kaysersberg loopt dan vraag je het je echt af. De mooie straatjes met de prachtige kleurrijke huizen, de versterkte brug met zijn kapeltje, het kasteel dat in perfecte staat van ontbinding op het dorp neerkijkt en de vallei met de uitzonderlijke goede balans tussen bossen en wijngaarden die als een patchwerk zijn neergelegd. Kaysersberg is echt helemaal perfect of het moet het weer zijn want het kan hier behoorlijk regenen.

De Vogezen liggen ten westen van de Rijn is één van de middelgebergten van Frankrijk. Vanaf het Rijndal beginnen de bergen vrij plots en rij je redelijk steil omhoog tot ongeveer 900 a 1.000 meter. Vlak daarachter liggen de hoogste toppen van het gebergte. Deze blijven onder de 1.500 meter en zijn daarmee flink lager dan de Mont Ventoux, de maatstaf voor alle bergen. Wat ze in hoogte missen compenseren ze echter met uitzicht en landschap. Deze twee ingrediënten maken het hoogste gedeelte van de Vogezen een unieke en betoverend mooie plek.

Monpazier ligt in de mooie streek tussen de Dordogne en de Lot en is de mooiste bastide dorpen in de Périgord. Een blik op de plattegrond van het dorp doet helemaal niet denken aan een middeleeuws dorp. Waar je organische opgebouwde nederzetting verwacht met nauwe straatjes en kronkelige steegjes heersen in Monpazier strakke lijnen en uniformiteit die meer doen denken aan een Romeinse legerplaats. Eigenaardig is ook dat het dorp helemaal niet door Fransen is gesticht maar door een Engelse koning.

Belcastel ligt niet ver van Najac en lijkt ook veel op dit andere dorp langs de rivier de Aveyron. Het is er allemaal wat rustiger en gemoedelijker hier want de toeristenindustrie heeft zich hier wat minder ontwikkeld. Net als Najac heeft Belcastel ook een kasteel dat hoog boven het dorp toornt, en net als in Najac is dit gebouw ook niet helemaal heel meer.
