De Grotte des Demoiselles liggen net ten zuiden van de Cevennen vlakbij het stadje Ganges. De grot is toegankelijk door middel van een soort treintje. Het omvat een enorme ruimte, cathédrale des abysses genaamd, waar een aantal prachtige bouwsels staan die ook nog eens bezaait zijn met glitters. Eén daarvan lijkt op een moeder met kind en dan is de link naar Maria natuurlijk snel gelegd. Et voila; de verklaring van de naam van deze ondergrondse ruimte.

Het kasteel van Fontainebleau ligt ten zuidoosten van Parijs en behoort samen met Vaux-le-Vicomte, Chambord en natuurlijk Versailles tot de grote kastelen van Frankrijk. De Franse koning Frans I liet in de zestiende eeuw het kasteel flink verbouwen en gebruikte het vaak voor feesten en partijen. Later, in het begin van de negentiende eeuw, vestigde Napoleon zich in Fontainebleau, als hij tenminste niet op veldtocht was. Nu staat er een enorm kasteel met indrukwekkend veel details waar het ontbreken van grote aantal bezoekers opvallend is.

De Gorges de la Nesque is een diepe kloof in de Vaucluse en ligt even ten zuiden van Carpentras in de schaduw van de Mont Ventoux. Tussen Villes-sur-Auzon en Monieux loopt er door de kloof een prachtige weg met een spectaculair uitzicht op de rivier die zich vierhonderd meter lager door het landschap slingert. Het is hier niet zo druk als bij de Ardèche of de Verdon dus je kan overal makkelijk stoppen om even lekker van het uitzicht te genieten.

De tocht door de kloof is met de auto uitstekend te combineren met een bezoek aan Gordes, de Abdij van Sénanque of de Mont Ventoux.  Te voet of op de fiets kan ook prima maar dan ben je wel een dagje zoet.

Even ten westen van Parijs in een bocht van de rivier de Seine ligt La Roche-Guyon. Het gezicht van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een groot kasteel waarvan het bovenste gedeelte in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd. Deze plek langs de Seine heeft steile hellingen en dat maakt het een mooi plaatje. La Roche-Guyon is dan ook sinds de negentiende eeuw een geliefde plek dat veel bekende kunstenaars trok.

In de vallei in het noorden van de Auvergne waar drie rivieren bij elkaar komen is Blesle gebouwd en dat is natuurlijk goede plek dat in het verleden voorspoed opleverde en nu goed is voor mooie plaatjes. Het dorp kende zijn bloeitijd vanaf de twaalfde eeuw en er staan nog redelijk veel huizen en gebouwen uit die tijd. Dat maakt het een aangename plek om een middag of een ochtend te verblijven. In dit dorp vind je tal van mooie plekje waar je de rijke geschiedenis bijna kan voelen.

Het landschap nodigt uit voor een mooie wandeling en omdat Blesle op pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela ligt kan je een stukje meelopen.

Sinds een jaar of tien ben ik gefascineerd door de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het is niet echt een obsessie maar als we in de buurt zijn van een belangrijke plek wil ik toch even een kijkje nemen. Wie ooit de Elzas heeft bezocht met de auto kan het kasteel van Haut Koenigsbourg  nauwelijks gemist hebben. Op een kleine vijftig kilometer ten zuiden van Straatsburg staat het dominant bijna achthonderd meter boven het Rijndal te heersen. Daar staat het al sinds de dertiende eeuw, of eigenlijk er staat al sinds de dertiende eeuw een kasteel want het huidige exemplaar is gebouwd rond 1900 met het idee om een middeleeuws kasteel na te maken, maar dan nog middeleeuwser. Je zou het kunnen vergelijken met een Disneyland of de Efteling maar dan gebouwd voor de machtigste man van Duitsland; Keizer Wilhelm II.

Een klassiek Frans dorp heeft een grote kerk, een rivier en als het even kan een mooi kasteel. Bonneval sur Arc lijkt op niets van dit alles. Het dorp in de Haut-Maurianne in de Franse Alpen en ligt in een diepe vallei dat wordt omgeven door bergen waarvan de meeste toppen hoger zijn dan drieduizend meter.

Essoyes ligt in de Champagne iets ten zuiden van Troyes. De Champagne is niet echt mijn favoriete streek in Frankrijk maar het zuidelijkste gedeelte, de Aube, dat tegen Bourgondië ligt kan mij wel bekoren. Het landschap is daar wat ruiger waar je heerlijk kan wandelen en waar de dorpen mooi zijn. Ze zijn niet allemaal even mooi en interessant maar Essoyes is dit zeker wel. Daarbij heeft het dorp een rijke historie en was bovendien de woonplaats één van Frankrijks beroemdste schilders: Auguste Renoir.

Chaource is een beetje een grensgeval. Alleen de ligging is al een probleem. Het dorp ligt volgens de kaart nog net in de Champagne maar behoort qua cultuur en landschap toch eigenlijk meer bij Bourgondië. Hier vind je geen graan en druivenranken maar grasland en koeien. In Chaource maken ze geen te dure wijn met bubbels, maar kaas. En die is verdomd lekker.
