Conflans ligt in het dal van Albertville in de Savoie midden in de Franse Alpen. Het dorp ligt op de plek waar de Arly in de rivier Isère uitmondt en daar heeft het dorp dan ook zijn naam aan te danken. Dankzij de strategische ligging hoog boven het dal beheerste Conflans eeuwenlange de omgeving. In de negentiende eeuw kwam daar een einde aan door de groei van Albertville waardoor het Middeleeuwse stadje zijn invloed zag dalen. Je hebt er prachtig uitzicht op de stad waar ooit de Olympische Spelen werden gehouden.

Het dorp Epoisses in de Côte d’Or is bekend om zijn kaas met zo’n sterke geur produceert dat je er gemakkelijk een halve straat mee plat krijgt. Maar het is ook een leuk dorp en mocht je er in de buurt zijn is het de moeite waard om even langs te rijden. En daar hoef je geen kaasliefhebber voor te zijn, al helpt het wel.

Lavaudieu ligt even ten zuiden van Clermond-Ferrand en is goed bereikbaar vanaf de snelweg A75 naar Milau. Het dorp kent een lange geschiedenis en is ontstaan in de elfde eeuw toen er hier een klooster werd gesticht. De achthoekige toren van de kerk van deze abdij domineert het silhouet van het plaatsje.

De Mont Saint-Michiel is samen met de Eiffeltoren de bekendste ‘landmark’ van Frankrijk. En dat is terecht want het kleine eiland voor de kust tussen Normandië en Bretagne is betoverend mooi en is in veel opzichten uniek. De abdij boven op de enige berg van het eiland kent een lange geschiedenis en een enorme hoeveelheid zalen, vertrekken en gangen. Je bent er echter nooit alleen, want hier komen na Parijs de meeste toeristen van Frankrijk.

Nu is Barfleur een klein dorpje, maar de in verhouding grote haven verraadt dat het dorp in het verleden belangrijk was. In de Middeleeuwen was Barfleur één van de belangrijkste havens aan het kanaal en kende het een bloeiperiode. Zo werd bijvoorbeeld het schip waarmee 1066 Willem de Veroveraar naar Engeland voer om daar de boel te veroveren werd hier gebouwd. Later werd er nog een zeeslag uitgevochten tussen Frankrijk tegen een Engelse en Nederlandse coalitie, die werd gewonnen door de Fransen.

In het zuiden van Normandië, aan de oevers van de rivier de Sarthe, ligt Saint Céneri le Gérei. Het dorp is ontstaan op de plek waar een oude Italiaanse kluizenaar zich in de zevende eeuw vestigde. En in die tijd werd je dan al snel heilig: Saint Céneri dus. Er werd vlot een klooster gebouwd dat helaas al in de middeleeuwen werd verwoest, door Vikingen in de tiende eeuw.

De Luberon in het zuiden van Frankrijk is een ware schatkamer van mooie dorpen. Het bergachtige landschap herbergt tal van schilderachtige gehuchten en plaatsjes. In het zuidoosten van de Luberon ligt Ansouis met zijn kasteel die zich boven een doolhof van straatjes en steegjes uit toornt.

De Luberon is een bergmassief tussen de Vaucluse in het noorden en de rivier Durance in het zuiden en vormt zo de grens tussen het binnenland en de kuststreek van de Provence. Ansouis is één van de vele mooie dorpen die deze streek rijk is. De hoeveelheid plaatsjes met het predicaat ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ is hier groot maar in bijna elk gehucht in deze streek wil je wel oud worden. Dat gebeurt ook want in de bevolking van de Luberon stijgt behoorlijk dankzij de immigratie van met name noorderlingen.

Parfondeval ligt in het oosten van Picardië tegen de Champagne aan. Het dorp ligt in een typisch Noord-Frans landschap met heuvels en een agrarische uitstraling. Zoals een Frans dorp betaamt, ligt in het midden van Parfondeval de kerk waarvan de vormgeving verre van normaal is. Vanaf de stichting in 1090 is Villefranche de Conflent een vesting geweest. Het dorp ligt ook op een strategische plek tussen de hoge rotsen en de plek waar de rivieren Têt en Cady bij elkaar komen. De militaire waarde van het stadje was eeuwenlang groot. Nog in de negentiende eeuw zijn de vestingmuren vernieuwd en vergroot. Napoleon III was de laatste die opdracht gaf om Villefranche de Conflent nog eens flink onder handen te nemen. Daarover later meer.

Evol ligt in het zuidelijkste puntje van het vaste land van Frankrijk. Het mooie dorpje in de Pyreneeën wordt beheerst door de ruïne van een oud kasteel en het vanzelfsprekende kerkje, Romaans natuurlijk. Het dorp in de Vallespir is geheel autovrij waardoor de schilderachtige straatjes goed tot hun recht komen.
