La Coupole is een enorme bunker uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog niet ver van Calais in de het noorden van Frankrijk. Het ondergrondse complex is gebouwd voor de opslag en lancering van V2 raketten maar dat is nooit gebeurd want de Engelsen kregen er lucht van en stuurden er een flink aantal bommenwerpers op af. Hoewel de bunker niet werd vernietigd was het niet meer bruikbaar en is er vanaf deze locatie nooit een raket op Londen afgeschoten.

Estaing ligt waar de rivier Coussane uitmondt in de Lot. De grote rivier slingert zich om het dorp heen waardoor het aan drie kanten water heeft. Dat is strategisch een goede positie want je hoeft alleen de kant waar geen water is te verdedigen en daar staat dan ook een flink kasteel. Het dorp heeft naast het kasteel vanzelfsprekend een kerk en een gezellig centrum met mooi uitzicht over de Lot en de oude brug.

Saint-Robert ligt in het prachtige landschap op de grens van de Perigord, Limousin en de Quercy. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote abdijkerk waar omheen is gebouwd. Sinds 1972 wordt er in de kerk elke zomer een festival voor klassieke muziek gehouden dat inmiddels een zeer goede reputatie heeft opgebouwd. Het moet een unieke ervaring zijn om in de kerk uit de twaalfde eeuw een concert bij te wonen.

La Grave ligt in een diep dal dat wordt omringt door bergen met toppen van meer dan drieduizend meter. Zoals zoveel dorpen in de Alpen is La Grave in de winter een waar Mekka voor de wintersporter en ‘s zomers het terrein voor bergsporters en sportieve wandelaars. In tegenstelling tot veel andere dorpen is La Grave niet in handen gekomen van grote projectontwikkelaars en zo is het dorp kleinschalig gebleven en heeft het haar originele karakter behouden.

Gargilesse-Dampierre ligt op dik twee uur rijden ten zuiden van Parijs vlak naast de snelweg A20. Het dorp ligt prachtig op de oever van de rivier Gargilesse en trekt door haar schoonheid nog altijd kunstenaars aan. Het heeft een eigen museum en een kerk met verrassend gave fresco’s uit de dertiende eeuw.

Semur en Brionnais ligt in het zuiden van Bourgondië en heeft een rijke geschiedenis. Het dorp had zijn bloeitijd in de Middeleeuwen en dat is duidelijk te zien aan het kasteel en de interessante kerk. Het moet hier vroeger een drukke boel zijn geweest maar nu ligt het dorpje te slapen in het glooiende landschap van de Brionnais.

Rodemack ligt op een steenworp van de grens van Luxemburg in het noordoosten van Frankrijk. Het dorp in Lotharingen is geheel ommuurd en heeft een poort met twee prachtige ronde torens. Rodemack is de ideale stopplaats op weg naar het zuiden.

Gerberoy ligt in Picardië in het noorden van Frankrijk tussen Beauvais en Amiens. Het is ontstaan in de tiende eeuw toen de graaf van Beauvais besloot op een heuvel een flink kasteel te bouwen. Het dorp heeft een lange bewogen geschiedenis maar verwelkomt pas in het begin van de twintigste eeuw zijn beroemdste inwoner: de schilder Henri Le Sidaner.

De Camargue is een uitgestrekt moerasland dat ligt in de delta van de Rhône in het zuiden van de Provence. De natuur heeft hier de vrije hand daarom vind je in dit moerasgebied unieke planten en dieren. Het gebied heeft meerdere gezichten en voor een bezoek moet je toch zeker een dag uittrekken waar je natuur, strand en cultuur uitstekend combineren. Fietsen en paardrijden kan hier uitstekend. Ik had mijn fiets niet bij mij en paardrijden kan ik niet dus de auto was het aangewezen vervoer en we hadden een prima dag in het gebied aan het einde van Frankrijk.

In Frankrijk heb je prachtige dorpjes en je hebt hele kleine prachtige dorpjes. Arlempdes behoort tot die laatste categorie. Dit dorp in de Auvergne ligt hoog boven de Loire in een gebied waar je je best moet doen om een buitenlandse toerist tegen te komen. Ondanks dat het dorp zo klein is heeft het toch een kasteel, of althans de resten daarvan, en die beheerst het aanzien van het dorp.
