De ligging van Tourtour is echt fantastisch. Het dorp ligt ruim zeshonderd meter hoog, waardoor het een prachtig uitzicht heeft op bijna de gehele Provence. Bij mooi weer zie je in het zuiden de bergen van Frejus en in het noordwesten is de Mont Ventoux te zien. Maar niet alleen het uitzicht is betoverend. De gezellige straatjes, de sfeervolle pleintjes en de Romaanse huizen en gebouwen geven je het gevoel dat je hier nooit meer weg wil.

Het dorp Noyers ligt op een soort schiereiland in de rivier Le Serein mooi te zijn in het landschap van Bourgondië. Het dorp kent een lange geschiedenis, maar is vooral mooi, rustig en sfeervol. Noyers sur Serein heeft een rijk verleden. In de middeleeuwen was het dorp één van de best verdedigde bolwerken, later werd Noyers een belangrijk centrum voor de wijnhandel. Een prima bestemming voor een leuke dag, maar ook groot genoeg om een paar dagen te verblijven.

Carennac ligt als een plaatje hoog boven de rechteroever van de Dordogne aan de rand van de Haut-Quercy. Bij het bezoeken van dit dorp begrijp je direct waarom deze streek zo geliefd is bij toeristen. Carennac heeft alles om het plaatje compleet te maken: een kasteel, een kerk, een klooster, schilderachtige straatjes en een prachtig uitzicht op de Dordogne.

Wij bezochten Carennac begin mei in een aarzelend zonnetje. Het toeristenseizoen was nog duidelijk in de opstartfase. De obers bewaakten met een dromerige blik de terrassen waar enkele dagjesmensen twijfelend aanschoven.

Bibracte ligt op de berg Mont Beuvray, 25 kilometer van Autun in Bourgondië. Op deze berg, in het zuiden van de Morvan, ligt een uitgebreid gebied waar een oude Keltische stad wordt opgegraven. Hier kun je archeologen aan het werk zien, een prachtig museum bezoeken, heerlijk wandelen en tegenwoordig zelfs een uitdagend parcours in de bomen volgen. Die Fransen weten heel goed hoe ze het verhaal van het verleden op een populaire manier moeten vertellen.

Op een dik uur rijden van Tarbes ligt de Pic du Midi du Bigorre. Met een hoogte van 2.877 meter is het niet de hoogste berg van de Pyreneeën, maar zeker één van de interessantste om te bezoeken. Op de top hebben de Fransen namelijk een enorme sterrenwacht gebouwd die nog altijd een belangrijke rol speelt bij het onderzoek van het heelal. De trotse Fransen hebben het zelfs voor elkaar gekregen dat het uitzicht op de sterren vanaf de Pic du Midi op de werelderfgoedlijst staat.

Riquewihr is één van de prachtige dorpen die als een parelketting langs de ‘route de vin d’Alsace’ liggen. Riquewihr is daar ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste van. Het dorp ligt fantastisch tussen de wijngaarden, heeft prachtige straatjes en pleintjes met vakwerkhuizen en wordt voor een groot deel omringt door verdedigingsmuren. Of eigenlijk de stadsmuren, want Riquewihr is officieel een stad, omdat het in 1320 stadsrechten kreeg.

Het dorp Autoire ligt in het westen in Frankrijk in de buurt van de rivieren de Lot en de Dordogne. Het heeft alles wat je van een Frans dorp mag verwachten; mooie huizen, een kerkje, een restaurantje en een monument voor de gesneuvelde soldaten uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Maar Autoire heeft nog iets meer want het ligt prachtig tussen de rotsen en heeft als bonus een prachtige waterval. Het is even lopen vanuit het dorp, maar het is de moeite waard! In La Couvertoirade waan je jezelf in de middeleeuwen. Het geheel ommuurde dorp is totaal autovrij en heeft zeer sfeervolle nauwe straatjes en prachtige monumenten. Wat mij het meest is bijgebleven, is het kleine kerkje met kerkhof met Tempeliersgraven.

Salers staat bekend om de gelijknamige kaas en zijn koeien. Maar het dorp staat ook vermeld in het bekende boekje ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ en behoort dus tot de mooiste dorpen van Frankrijk. Volgens de Fransen is Salers de absolute top want het verloor in 2012 de finale van de verkiezingen op televisie van het mooiste dorp van Frankrijk van Saint Criq-Lapopie. Wij vonden het dorp ook bijzonder mooi. Goed voor vier sterren.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is een langgerekt dorp dat is gebouwd in een kloof van het riviertje Les Verdus. De weg naar het dorp loopt langs de Gorge de Hérault en dat is een mooie route naar het dorp. Het dorp rekt zich uit door een kloof. De straatjes zijn smal met veel winkeltjes.
