In de Finistère vlak naast het Parc Naturel Régional d’Armorique ligt Le Faou. Het dorpje ligt aan een binnenzee en heeft een haventje. In de zestiende eeuw was Le Faou een drukke plaats waar veel schepen werden gebouwd. Veel huizen in het dorp zijn uit deze tijd en je kan er dan ook heerlijk wandelen, waarna je de honger kan stillen aan een eenvoudige doch voedzame maaltijd. Wie nog energie overheeft kan vervolgens een frisse wandeling in de natuur maken.

Als je op Lavardens komt aanrijden dan trekt het kasteel direct de aandacht. Ooit een stoer militair gebouw maar in de zeventiende eeuw omgebouwd tot een fraai lustoord met opvallende architectuur. Naast het kasteel heeft het dorp nog een leuke kerk en, vreemd genoeg, een telefoonmuseum.

Zoals de naam van het dorp al doet vermoeden is de geschiedenis van Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye nauw verbonden met het klooster. De abdij was de trotse bezitter van de relieken van de heilige Antonius en ligt op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Het dorp in de Isère groeide rondom de religieuze gebouwen die nog altijd het aanzien van Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye domineren.

Moncontour ligt strategisch op een heuvel op de plaats waar de rivieren Evron en de Ruisseau de l’Etang samenkomen. Het dorpje heeft een lange militaire geschiedenis en dat is te zien aan de muur die het hele dorp omringt. Eenmaal binnen is het genieten van de prachtige kleine straatjes waar je de middeleeuwen kan ruiken.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ligt in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën dichtbij de Spaanse grens. Het dorp ligt op de Camino Francé of wel de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Deze positie heeft de ontwikkeling van de plaats in grote mate bepaald. Daarbij is Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port vooral een Baskische stad waar de de lokale cultuur een belangrijke rol speelt.

Even ten westen van Parijs in een bocht van de rivier de Seine ligt La Roche-Guyon. Het gezicht van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door een groot kasteel waarvan het bovenste gedeelte in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd. Deze plek langs de Seine heeft steile hellingen en dat maakt het een mooi plaatje. La Roche-Guyon is dan ook sinds de negentiende eeuw een geliefde plek dat veel bekende kunstenaars trok.

In september 2017 ging de vlag uit op het gemeentehuis in Veules Les Roses want vanaf dat moment mocht het dorp aan de kanaalkust zich officieel ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’ noemen. En wat wil je nu meer als Frans dorp. Het dorp herbergt de kleinste rivier van Frankrijk en heeft een prachtige kust met hoge kliffen met een voor Franse begrippen een aardig strand.

Midden in de moerassen tussen Rochefort en het eiland Oleron ligt het dorp Brouage. Deze vestingstad doet een beetje denken aan Willemstad of Naarden want het ligt compleet binnen de verdedigingswallen van een grote citadel. Maar dan in een moeras in de middle of nowhere. Het moet voor de verdedigers van deze stad vooral een gevecht tegen de verveling en de muggen zijn geweest want een vijandelijk leger heeft zich hier nooit gemeld. Montréal ligt in de Gers en vormt samen met Larressingle en Fourcès een driehoek van prachtige dorpen. Het dorp in zuidwest Frankrijk heeft een prachtig kleine dorpskern waar het heerlijk wandelen is. Maar in het landschap van de Armagnac liggen rondom het dorp een aantal interessante zaken verborgen; een Romeinse villa, een vervallen kerk en één van de belangrijkste vindplaatsen van fossielen in Frankrijk.

Limeuil ligt waar de rivier de Vézère uitmondt in de Dordogne in de Perigord. Het dorp is misschien één van de oudst nu nog bewoonde plek in Frankrijk want hier zijn spulletjes gevonden van mensen die aan het einde van de laatste ijstijd op rendieren en mammoeten jaagden. Dat moet een stevige barbecue zijn geweest. Daar is tegenwoordig niet veel meer van te zien maar dat gelukkig is er nog genoeg te beleven.
